Grooming is an important part in the overall care of your dog and cat. Grooming involves taking care of the skin, coat, teeth, ears, pads, and nutrition of your pet. Your dog's or cat's skin and coat is what keeps undesirable things such as viruses and bacteria from entering the body and keeps desirable things in such as heat and water. Keeping the ears clean, teeth brushed, toenails clipped, and pads cared for is important for physical health and comfort. Keeping the skin and coat healthy also depends on good nutrition and choosing a high quality food with the proper amounts of protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Proper grooming is not only necessary if you want your pet to look better, but to help keep him or her in overall good health.

Dog Grooming Information

Your dog needs to be groomed regularly, whether he has short hair or long hair, is a big dog or small dog, or whether he is an indoor or outdoor dog. Daily grooming involves brushing and combing the hair (it reduces shedding, keeps the fur from matting, stimulates the skin, and allows the natural oils to circulate to the coat) and brushing the teeth. Weekly grooming involves cleaning the ears and clipping the nails. You should also keep your dogs eyes clean and check their pads on a regular basis. While some dogs get weekly shampoos, every four to six weeks is sufficient for most dogs. When shampooing your dog, make sure you use a shampoo specially formulated for dogs. Human shampoos or other cleaning products not intended for dogs can irritate their skin, make their coat dull and lifeless, and cause more severe problems with continued use. Some breeds of dogs may require haircuts, every four to eight weeks depending on how fast the hair grows. There are many great products to help you groom your dog on your own or as a supplement to professional grooming appointments.

Cat Grooming Information

Cats need grooming too. Even though they are constantly grooming themselves, their looks and health can benefit with a little help from their owners. Cats should be brushed or combed daily to promote healthy skin and fur and to remove tangles and mats in the fur, especially if they are a long-haired breed. Brushing and combing helps remove the shedding hair, otherwise the cat licks up the extra hair and throws it up as hairballs. Every couple of weeks the clippers should be used to trim their nails. While baths are not as common for cats as for dogs, it may be necessary on occasion. Sometimes a cat gets stinky or dirty fur that requires more than just a brushing, especially if they meet up with a skunk. Because of cats natural aversion to water, it is best to introduce them to baths when young so they learn to tolerate it. If you have to bathe your cat, brush the fur first, expect to get wet, bathe in a closed area to avoid a great escape, use a shampoo formulated for cats, and towel dry them thoroughly. You can purchase grooming products to groom your cat on your own or as a supplement to professional grooming appointments.
