About this product

What is Proin?

Proin is a medication that is used to relieve the symptoms of urinary incontinence in dogs. Proin requires a prescription from your veterinarian who is in the best position to evaluate if your pet will benefit from using this drug.

For:

Dogs

Benefits:

  • Is a supplement for urinary incontinence in dogs
  • Ensures sustained phenylpropanolamine levels in the blood stream and may help reduce the conditions often associated with high levels of phenylpropanolamine such as: decreased appetite, changes in heart rate, increased blood pressure, hyperexcitability

How it Works:

Proin contains the active ingredient phenylpropanolamine, an adrenergic agent that works by tightening the bladder sphincter muscle, which helps to control urine leakage.

Cautions:

Don't give Proin with ephedrine or epinephrine, and don't give it within two weeks of using a MAOi, such as Anipryl, selegiline or a Preventic Collar. Possible side effects can occur, including restlessness, or loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. If these or any other side effects occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Brand Name:

Proin (PRN Pharmacal)

Generic Name:

Phenylpropanolamine

What is the most important information I should know about Proin:

Proin is a prescription medication for veterinary use in dogs. Proin is available as 25mg, 50mg and 75mg chewable, liver flavor tablets. Proin may cause restlessness, irritability, or loss of appetite.

What is Proin:

Proin is an adrenergic agent used as a supplemental product for urinary incontinence in dogs. Proin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this guide.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before giving Proin to my pet:

How should this medication be given:

The usual dose for dogs is 0.4-0.8mg/pound every 12 hours. Give Proin exactly as directed by the veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you. Store Proin at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep this medication away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss giving a dose:

Give the missed dose as soon as you remember during the same day. However, if you don't remember until the next day, skip the dose you missed and give only the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not give a double dose of the medication.

What happens if I overdose my pet:

Continue to give the medication and contact your veterinarian. Other less serious side effects may occur. Contact your veterinarian about any side effects that seem bothersome.

Pet Meds kindness!
My girl, Binca, who was on Proin, died on Tuesday, Sept 9th at the age of 16.4 years old. I called to see if you could take the med back. Pet Meds graciously refunded my money. I've used Pet Meds for years and altho it hasn't always been smooth sailing, I've very happy with you. Thank you for caring and understanding. P.S. you also took her carprofen back.

Proin (hydrochloride) review by Lee McNamar
My 13 year old female Labrador had incontenance early in her life. She has been on Proin successfully for 12 of those 13 years. I consider her and myself very fortunate as I hate to think what her life span would have been without it.

ALWAYS a hassle
Not sure why I come back to this site-multiple delays, multiple calls to see if the Rx was received-what should be an easy order ends up being a week long run around. Be warned-don’t let your pet’s prescription run out! It will be a long slow process

Slow service
Petmeds waited 3 days to ship my order after the prescription was renewed by my vet. When I tried phone contact it was over a 30 minute wait, I tried more than once and no one answered my call. This will probably be my last order through Petmeds.

Leaking doggie
Our girl leaked due to being spayed young and rather poorly. She leaked urine and it was sad. The Proin 50 mg was a game changer and we have been forever grateful for many years. Our veterinarian is the best and her bladder sphincter tightens when she’s given her Proin daily. Grateful customer and doggie.

Proin 75 mg
Pro and 75 mg seems to be the best cure for incontinence for my Dobe. I have never had a problem ordering the medication for Lucy. They always contact my Vet and get the approval and send it right out. I’m very happy with the service I receive from pet meds.
